Bhima-Koregaon Case: Activist Varavara Rao Granted Bail
Guwahati: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday granted bail to poet and activist P Varavara Rao in the Bhima-Koregaon case.
Rao was granted bail on medical reasons, with the stipulation that he not abuse his freedom in any way, according to Justice U U Lait.
Rao is now free on interim release after contesting the Bombay High Court’s April 13 ruling that denied his request for permanent bail due to a medical condition.
It should be mentioned that the case is associated with allegedly inciting remarks made on December 31, 2017, at the Elgar Parishad summit in Pune.
The following day, near the Koregaon-Bhima war memorial on the outskirts of the city of western Maharashtra, police alleged that his speech had sparked violence.
The conference was allegedly organised by individuals with ties to the Maoist movement, according to Pune Police. Later, the National Probe Agency (NIA) took up the investigation.
Rao is currently undergoing trial after being arrested on August 28, 2018, at his home in Hyderabad. On January 8 of that year, Pune Police reported a crime under several sections of the Indian Penal Code and the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act.
