Assam: 3 Arrested For Rhino Horn Smuggling Near Kaziranga

Guwahati: Three people were detained by Assam’s forest officials for allegedly participating in the illicit rhino horn trade in the Golaghat district on Thursday.

According to forest officials, three people were engaged in smuggling rhino horns near Kaziranga National Park.

District Forest Officer Ramesh Kumar Gogoi said, “One of the accused was caught from the Baghmari area near Kaziranga. After his confession, two others were also nabbed.”

More research is currently being done.

Reportedly, after a case of poachers using tranquillizers to remove rhino horn in Assam’s Orang National Park earlier this year, the state’s forest service has faced with a new difficulty in protecting one-horned rhinoceros.

The horn of a sub-adult rhino in the national park was apparently hacked off by poachers without the rhino being killed.

However, the sub-adult male rhino, aged between 10 and 12 years, was found dehorned in the park’s Muwamari area on May 9, after park officials learned of the event.
