Assam CM’s appeal to people: “Go To Court For Serious Matters Only”

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Friday urged the public to only bring serious issues before the court in order to prevent overtaxing it with unimportant cases.

Sarma and Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court Justice RM Chhaya opened the newly built courthouse for the Barpeta district at a formal ceremony performed on the Satras’ property.

In his speech, Sarma urged the audience to choose an “out-of-court, traditional system of solving disputes” by using family elders as mediators in cases of less serious offences so that the formal judicial system “can devote its workforce and time on issues of serious nature such as murder, rape, etc.”

“Due to issues and cases of less serious nature burdening the judiciary, “justice for victims of heinous crimes are getting delayed,” the CM said.

During his address, Sarma also announced that the Assam government would invest a total of Rs 300 crore over the following three years to build up and improve the facilities of the district and sub-divisional judicial courts located throughout the state’s several districts.
