Japan To Hold ‘2+2 Talks’ With India Next Month
Guwahati: Japan will start making plans to undertake “two-plus-two” discussions with India between its foreign and defence ministries and their Indian counterparts by the beginning of September, Nikkei reported on Thursday.
The report mentioned that arrangements were being made for Tokyo, the capital city, to host the diplomatic level talks.
It should be emphasised that the two nations had only ever held “two-plus-two” negotiations once before, in 2019.
The report from Nikkei also stated that at that time, Japan and India had agreed to conduct coordinated military exercises.
It is anticipated that a number of important topics, including bilateral cooperation and the situation in the Indo-Pacific would be discussed.
The Indian delegation of Union defence minister Rajnath Singh and foreign minister S Jaishankar will be visiting Tokyo next month to hold talks with Japan’s foreign minister Yoshimasa Hayashi and defence minister Yasukazu Hamada.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is reportedly planning to travel to Japan to attend the funeral of former Prime Minister Shinzo Abe although there has been no official confirmation
Abe, who had been shot on July 8 during a political rally in Nara, Japan, later passed away. Three weeks after the talks, on September 27, his burial would be held. He was a close friend of Prime Minister Modi.
