SC on Pegasus Spyware Petition: ‘Centre Did Not Cooperate’
Guwahati: The central government allegedly refused to assist with the investigation into the Pegasus spyware issue, according to claims made by the Supreme Court on Thursday.
Reportedly, a committee was created by the supreme court to look into the matter, but the bench chaired by Chief Justice N V Ramana stated that the “Centre has not cooperated.”
Meanwhile, the malware was discovered on only five of the 29 phones that were examined, according to the supreme court. However, it said, there is undeniable evidence of Pegasus spyware in them.
The top court was reviewing a report that had been provided by the technical team, SC had assembled to look into claims that Pegasus malware had been used to hack into the phones of journalists, activists, and politicians.
Three parts of the report were submitted: two by the technical committee and one by the supervisory committee, which was composed of Justice RV Raveendran, a retired SC judge, and Justices Surya Kant and Hima Kohli.
The CJI said, a part of the report will be made public on the SC’s website, “We will be making the third part of the report by Justice Raveendran on recommendations public on our website,” adding the committee asked not to bring the entire report in the public domain.
A small number of petitioners requested copies of the two parts of the report in the interim, to which CJI replied that the court will consider their request.
A four-week adjournment was made for the case.
