Guwahati: Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev who is popularly known as Tirubhav Tithi, passed away 454 years ago today.

Numerous events have been scheduled for the day at the Namghars throughout Assam in honour of the anniversary, and people from all over the state are swarming to them.

Many locations, such as Dhekiakhowa Bornaamghar, Batadrava Than, Majuli, and Barpetra Satra, have experienced a drop in religious enthusiasm. Kirtan and Hori Naam chants are purifying the Namghor building.

According to the western calendar, Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardev’s tithi occurs in August or September. In the month of Bhadra, the day is also a regional public holiday in Assam.

Assamese polymath and saint-scholar Sankardev, who lived in the sixteenth century is credited for uniting Assam and is revered as the founder of Assamese culture.

The saint is widely recognised with creating new genres of music (Borgeet), theatrical performance (Anika Naat, Bhaona), dance (Sattriya), and literary language, and he also had a profound impact on Assamese culture, religion, and society (Brajavali). He left a sizable body of work that includes poetry, theological writings, and trans-created scriptures (Bhagavat of Sankardev) in Sanskrit, Assamese, and Brajavali.

His promotion of the Bhagavatic Ekasaranam Dharam or Neo-Vaishnavite movement had an impact on the mediaeval kingdoms of Koch and Ahom, and the gathering of devotees he organised became the Sattras, which are now significant socio-religious organisations in Assam.

Assam’s Bhakti movement was inspired by Shankardev. His literary and creative works have become ingrained traditions in Assam. There are many people who follow the faith he preached.
