Whats App Banned Over 2.39 Million Indian Accounts in July
Guwahati: The number of Indian accounts banned reached a record high of 2.39 million in July, according to the widely used instant messaging service Whats App, which is owned by Meta.
Large digital platforms are compelled to publish compliance reports every month due to India’s tighter IT legislation.
Major social media messaging platforms were required to allow the identify of the first author of information if required to do so by courts, according to draught guidelines that were made public in June. These rules also proposed the creation of a panel to hear user appeals.
1.42 million of the blocked accounts were “proactively banned,” meaning they were suspended without user reports.
As a consequence of complaints made through the company’s grievances channel and the techniques and resources it uses to discover such offences, the social media platform claimed that a number of accounts were banned.
574 complaints were reported in July to WhatsApp overall.
The messaging service, which has previously drawn criticism for encouraging hate speech and fake news both inside and outside of India, deleted 2.21 million accounts in June.
