National Flags Fly at Half-Mast As India Mourns Demise of Queen Elizabeth II

Guwahati: All national flags in all official buildings, including the Red Fort and Rashtrapati Bhavan, fly at half-mast on Sunday in observance of Britain’s Queen Elizabeth II, who passed away on September 8.

People also paid their respects to the Queen, who surpassed Queen Victoria, who had ruled from 1837 to 1901, to become the monarch with the longest reign in the United Kingdom in 2015.

“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland passed away on 8th September 2022. As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, the Government of India has decided that there will be one day State Mourning on September 11th throughout India,” an official statement of the Ministry of Home Affairs read.

“There will be no official entertainment on the day,” the ministry said.

Queen Elizabeth II, the monarch with the longest reign in Britain, passed away on Thursday. She was 96.

Elizebeth II, who ascended to the throne in 1952, ruled for 70 years. 15 prime ministers served during her reign, including Liz Truss, who was chosen by the Queen earlier this week and was born 101 years after Winston Churchill in 1975.

Meanwhile, Prince Charles III was crowned king on Saturday during a ceremony at St. James’s Palace.
