Assam: 2 Advocates Arrested for Brokering Marriage of Rape Victim

Guwahati: Two advocates were arrested for arranging the marriage of a young rape victim with her perpetrator in Abhayapuri of Assam on Sunday.

The accused has been identified as Musha Ali and Lutfur Rahman.

According to reports, both of them were arrested after drafting legal documents for the rape victim’s marriage to her accused in violation of the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POSCO) Act 2012.

The lawyers said, “The agreement memorandum was created six months ago at the request of both parties. The victim’s guardians agreed that she would get married after turning 18 and that the accused would stay away from her and not be able to marry anyone else until that time. The declaration was signed by the accused and the victim’s guardians because they were both parties to the settlement and the victim was a minor.”

They claimed that although they were detained as part of a plot, there was no legal infringement because both parties had requested the agreement paper.

The police have also arrested the rape accused in connection with the investigation.
