SC Adjourn Hearing Of Pleas Challenging CAA For September 19

Guwahati: The hearing of a number of petitions contesting the legality of the contentious Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA), 2019, was postponed by the Supreme Court on Monday.

The Supreme Court set the subject for further hearing on September 19.

Over 200 petitions opposing the law were being heard by a court made up of Justice S Ravindra Bhat and Chief Justice of India UU Lalit.

A bench headed by the then-CJI SA Bobde published a notice in the petitions in January 2020.

It should be emphasised that the central government asserted in their affidavit that the CAA does not violate any rights that may have existed before the amendment’s passage.

It was further asserted that the CAA does not aim to interfere with any Indian citizen’s constitutional, democratic, or secular rights.
