Mukul Rohatgi To Be Next Attorney General of India Again

Guwahati: Senior lawyer Mukul Rohatgi is expected to be named after KK Venugopal left his position as Attorney General of India (AG), according to news agency ANI.

It should be noted that Rohatgi (67) previously held the position of AG from June 2014 to June 2017.

The incumbent AG, KK Venugopal, had already stated that he was unable to hold onto the position through September 30 due to health issues. Last Monday, Venugopal informed a Supreme Court Constitution Bench that his term ended on September 30.

Venugopal succeeded Rohatgi as Attorney General for a three-year tenure on July 1, 2017. Venugopal is well-known for his expertise in constitutional law. The Union government granted the 91-year-old Venugopal two one-year extensions after his initial three-year term ended, despite his repeated statements that he did not want to stay in the position.

The Centre had prolonged Venugopal’s term by three additional months in June of this year. In the end, he consented to the three-month extension, which runs through September 30, so that the administration could find a replacement.

Rohatgi held the position of AG for three years from 2015 to 2017 following the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance government’s election to power in 2014.

Rohatgi previously held the position of Additional Solicitor General of India and is currently a senior attorney at the Supreme Court of India.
