Minimum Wage of Labourers Hiked by 67 Percent in Sikkim
Guwahati: The Sikkim government on Wednesday increased the minimum pay for unskilled workers by 67 per cent to Rs 500.
Sikkim labour minister Lok Nath Sharma said that the daily wage for unskilled labourers has risen from Rs 300 to Rs 500.
“Today, the labour department has issued a notification for the implementation of the revised wages, which the chief minister approved on September 13. The daily earnings will climb by a very high 67 percent as a result of the modification. Sikkim now ranks third with this modification, only after Delhi and Andaman & Nicobar, where the minimum wage is somewhat higher,” Sharma said.
According to the labour minister, skilled workers will now receive Rs 535 per day instead of Rs 335 previously, while semi-skilled workers’ daily pay has climbed from Rs 320 to Rs 520.
The minister further said that highly trained professionals will now receive Rs 565 per day rather than Rs 365.
These salaries are valid for employees working up to an altitude of 8,000 feet, while employees working between an altitude of 8,001 and 12,000 feet will receive 50% extra pay.
Those who work between 12,001 and 16,000 feet above sea level will be paid 75% more than the average salary. The minister announced that employees who work in locations over 16,001 feet will receive double the typical pay, the minister said.
