Guwahati: Guwahati Police have arrested two fraudsters on suspicion of taking part in a “money doubling” scam from the city on Wednesday.
The fraudsters have been identified as Saiful Islam and PR Hussain.
Reportedly, two fraudsters who preyed on unsuspecting victims online, duped them into investing a modest sum of money in exchange for a guarantee that they would receive back twice as much in a short period of time.
The fraudsters called a couple in Madhya Pradesh and requested that they deposit Rs. 10 lakh with the promise of receiving Rs. 40 lakhs in return.
The couple filed a complaint with Dispur Police Station after the exchange of money took place inside an Uber cab and cash totaling Rs. 10,000 was spread out over a number of blank pieces of paper.
The police tracked and seized the car and apprehended two fraudsters in connection with the fraud.
Two bundles of Rs. 500 notes were also impounded along with the bogus note production machine.
Meanwhile, the couple is currently being held for further questioning.
