NSCN-IM to Resume Peace Talks with Centre Today
Guwahati: It’s expected that the National Socialist Council of Nagaland-Isak Muivah (NSCN-IM) would pick up discussions with the federal government over the political situation of the Naga on Tuesday.
The meeting might also include participation from AK Mishra, the Centre’s negotiator for the Naga peace negotiations. On Monday, the NSCN-IM team took a flight from Dimapur, Nagaland, to Delhi.
Members of the Core Committee on Naga Political Issue (CCoNPI) and NSCN-IM representatives met for two hours on Saturday in Chumukeidma of Nagaland.
It was established when the Centre ordered the committee, which is led by chief minister Neiphiu Rio, to persuade the group to return to the table for peace negotiations and sign a binding agreement.
The NSCN-IM is reportedly eager to negotiate with the centre “based on provisions and pledges made in the Framework Agreement of August 3, 2015,” having previously highlighted the problems of a distinct Flag and Constitution.
The NSCN-IM agreed to resume the process in response to a request from the CCoNPI, according to former Nagaland chief minister TR Zeliang, who is currently the head of the state’s ruling United Democratic Alliance (UDA).
Since May, talks between the Center and the NSCN-IM have halted. But since 1997, the Union government has had two different discussions with the NSCN-IM, and since 2017, it has had two separate discussions with the seven-organization Naga National Political Groups (NNPGs).
