Mawmluh Cave in Meghalaya among UNESCO’s 100 heritage sites

Guwahati: The International Union of Geological Sciences (IUGS) (UNESCO) has selected the Mawmluh Cave in Sohra of Meghalaya, as one of the “first 100 IUGS Geological Sites” in the world.

State chief minister Conrad Sangma informed this through twitter.

The “Meghalayan Age” is associated with Mawmluh Cave, also known as Krem Mawmluh. The stalagmite structures and other rock formations inside the tunnels make it the fourth-longest cave on the Indian Subcontinent.

Numerous geologists and scientists conducted research within the cave and discovered enormous stalactites and stalagmites. The stalagmite discovered inside Mawmluh cave was included in the Geologic Time Scale at a height of 1,290 metres.

In the Mawmluh Cave, a geological treasure trove, rainwater has been trickling steadily from the ceiling in the same places for more than a thousand years. Every drop of water deposits minerals into the floor below, where they gradually build up to form calcium carbonate towers known as stalagmites.
