40,000 kg drugs destroyed in NE in virtual presence of Amit Shah
Guwahati: Drugs weighing 40,000kg were burnt on Saturday in the virtual presence of Union Home Minister Amit Shah after being seized by the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) and agencies of the Northeastern states.
A total of 11,000 kg of drugs were burned in Guwahati along with another 8,000 kg of drugs that the Assam government agencies confiscated.
Taking to Twitter, Home Minister tweeted, “Approx 40,000 kg of drugs were destroyed in Northeastern states in presence of Union Home Minister, Shri @AmitShah. By NCB in Guwahati- 11,000 kg, Assam- 8,000 kg, Arunachal Pradesh- 4000 kg, Meghalaya- 1600 kg, Nagaland- 398 kg, Manipur- 1900 kg, Mizoram- 1500 kg, Tripura- 12,000 kg.”
Amit Shah, who is in Assam for three days, witnessed drugs being destroyed practically all across the city of Guwahati.
Meanwhile, Tripura was the state with the most amount of drugs destroyed (12,000 kg), followed by Arunachal Pradesh with 4,000 kg, Meghalaya with 1,600 kg, Manipur with 1,900 kg, Mizoram with 1,500 kg, and Nagaland with 398 kg.
Addressing the media, Amit Shah said, “Drugs are smuggled into Northeast India via Afghanistan and Myanmar.”
“Narendra Modi has an ambition of creating a country free of drugs, and we will keep working to fulfil this objective. We have been combating narcotics and will keep fighting them,” he said.
Shah has also commanded each state’s Chief Secretaries and DGPs to take decisive action against drug smuggling following Diwali.
