Russia Fires Missiles Into Ukrainian Cities, Including Kiev

Guwahati: Several explosions shook Kyiv the capital of Ukraine on Monday morning according to local media which also quoted the mayor of the city.

Smoke was spotted rising from a number of locations throughout Kiev.

The cities of Lviv, Zhytomyr, Khmelnytsky, Dnipro, and Ternopil have also reported explosions. There have been numerous explosions reported in cities around the nation. Power outages and loud explosions have been reported by eyewitnesses in Kiev, according to the local newspaper ,The Kyiv Independent.

As explosions could be heard in the Ukrainian city of Kyiv, dramatic video of BBC correspondent Hugo Bachega hiding while reporting from the scene quickly spread on social media. Suddenly, many explosions could be heard coming from behind, and the reporting was interrupted.

Mayor Vitali Klitschko was quoted by Ukraine’s local media outlet Kyiv Independent as saying that there had been several explosions and that emergency personnel were on the scene. More information would be provided, according to Klitschko, the portal claimed.

The explosions followed a truck explosive attack on the Kerch bridge on Saturday that ignited seven gasoline tanks on a train en route to the Crimean Peninsula. According to news accounts, the explosion resulted in the deaths of three persons and the partial collapse of two spans of the road bridge.

The Kremlin reported shortly after that President Vladimir Putin had approved a directive boosting security for the Crimea bridge.In the decree, Putin also called for securing the energy bridge and the gas pipeline connecting the peninsula with mainland Russia.

Media reports said that Putin plans to hold an operational meeting of his Security Council today.

The bridge was opened in 2018 by Putin, four years after Moscow annexed Crimea and was designed to link the peninsula to Russia’s transport network. The 19-kilometre bridge which runs across the Kerch Strait and connects Crimea with mainland Russia consists of a railway and vehicle sections. It became fully operational in 2020.

At least 17 people were killed and 40 others injured after a rocket struck Ukraine’s Zaporizhzhia area on Saturday . Acting Mayor of Zaporizhzhia Anatoly Kurtev said that in the attack five houses were destroyed and apartment buildings were damaged, CNN reported.According to Anatoly Kurtev, the acting mayor of Zaporizhzhia, five homes were burned and apartment complexes were damaged in the incident, they said.
