Assam Flood Situation Remains Grim; over 40,000 people affected across 11 districts

Guwahati: Assam’s flood situation remained dire as more places were submerged as a result of the past 24 hours’ worth of torrential rain. There are now two more districts under water. The third wave of flooding this season in the northeastern state resulted in an increase to 11 impacted districts.

According to the bulletin issued by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), Darrang, Dhemaji, Dhubri, Dibrugarh, Golaghat, Jorhat, Lakhimpur, Kokrajhar, Majuli, Nagaon, and Tinsukia are the districts of the state. Apart from Assam, Arunachal Pradesh also received heavy rainfall in the past few days.

On Thursday, Assam had nine flood-affected districts. However, on Friday, there were 41,287 affected individuals as opposed to 50,839 the day before. The state’s worst-affected district is Lakhimpur. According to news agency PTI, there are currently over 26,000 people struggling to survive the flood.

The Brahmaputra River is flowing above the danger threshold near Nematighat in the Jorhat district and Tezpur, according to the ASDMA. 24 income circles’ worth of 283 villages has apparently been flooded.

Bishwanath, Bongaigaon, and Dhemaji have suffered damage to their roads and other infrastructure. Several districts, including Biswanath, Bongaigaon, Dhemaji, Dibrugarh, and Tinsukia, have reported erosion. The Guwahati Meteorological Centre has issued a rainfall forecast for the state through Saturday that ranges from quite extensive to dispersed and isolated.

Notably, Assam has been experiencing its third flood wave this season since Monday. Around 200 people perished in different flood-related tragedies during the first wave.
