Maharashtra Reports New Omicron subvariants BQ.1, XBB
Guwahati: A new instance of COVID-19, a novel sub-variant of the Omicron variation that has been found in Kerala and other regions of India, was reported in Maharashtra. According to a dispatch from the state health department, the number of coronavirus cases in the state has increased by 17.7% over the previous week.
In addition, Maharashtra has reported incidences of the Omicron sub-variants BA.2.3.20 and BQ.1, which were discovered for the first time in India on Monday in a patient’s sample from Pune.
A recent spike was observed in the fast-spreading variation XBB, which is a recombinant lineage between the Omicron sublineages BJ.1 and BA.2.75.
As per the Maharashtra Health Department report, the XBB, has a growth advantage over BA.2.75 and evasive immune properties, ANI reported.
Statistics predict that the number of new Covid cases in the state would rise by 17.7% this week, from October 10 to 16, compared to the week between October 3 and 9. According to the official notification from the health department, this spike has been seen in Thane, Raigad, and Mumbai.
In a patient sample from Pune on October 17, India discovered the first instance of Omicron’s BQ.1 subvariant. According to sources, the BQ.1 is a descendant of BA.5, which is responsible for 60% of the Covid cases in the United States (US).
