Guwahati: Influencers are at it yet again. One Instagram influencer has received criticism for her most recent posts.
The woman darkened her complexion and adopted the persona of a roadside seller in her social media images. She appeared in a reel wearing the same outfit as well. She was seen in the brief video giving out roses to passersby.
The woman named Ansha Mohan who has more than 3 lakh social media followers. Online users were agitated by the images and videos. She was accused by many of manipulating the image of the poor to further her political and social ideals. Others questioned her reasoning for using the divisive idea in her work.
“So this person on Instagram darkens her colour and pretends to be poor.. for what?? This is insane??” asked one. Another stated, “Photography is an art form and is a powerful tool. Here, It’s grossly misused and way too insensitive. Where is art in this?”
Meanwhile, some people thought she was trying to make a point. “Maybe the photographer or model is trying to portray that there is beauty in everything. Because in a country where there are fairness creams, it’s not surprising that some creative people want to put this message forward,” wrote one person defending the act. Another stated, “It’s a photoshoot. Not her pretending to be something. While photography is subjective, you’re way off base in assuming that she’s doing it to mock someone else.”
“This isn’t America…..I think the theme of that photoshoot is dark skin can be beautiful too….in a country where people are obsessed with fair skin this is good!!” said a third person.
