SC Affirms Death Penalty of LeT Terrorist Ashfaq For 2000 Red Fort Attack
Guwahati: The death punishment for Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) terrorist Mohammad Arif alias Ashfaq in the case involving the 2000 Red Fort attack was upheld by the Supreme Court on Thursday.
Ashfaq’s review appeal challenging the death penalty was denied by a panel consisting of Chief Justice of India UU Lalit and Justice Bela M Trivedi.
“We have accepted the prayers that electronic records must be placed in consideration. His guilt is proved. We affirm the view taken by this court and reject the review petition,” the court said.
It should be noted that on December 22, 2000, a terrorist attack at Red Fort resulted in the deaths of three individuals, including two soldiers.
Three days after the assault, Ashfaq was arrested, and the Delhi High Court sentenced him to death in September 2007.
Ashfaq petitioned the Supreme Court in August 2011 to overturn his death sentence. However, the Supreme Court rejected his appeal and upheld the death penalty.
