Mizoram: Protesting Landowners Call Off Road Blockade
Guwahati: The landowners’ road barricade along Mizoram’s Kolasib district’s National Highway 306 in Vairengte town was lifted has been called off on Sunday.
More than 1,700 private landowners along the NH-306 and NH-6 section have been on indefinite strike preventing vehicles from entering the state via Assam since Thursday.
Landowners who had their land taken over for the construction of a four-lane motorway between Silchar, Assam and Aizawl demanded quick payment of compensation.
After representatives of the Young Mizo Association (YMA), the largest organisation in the state mediated on Saturday afternoon, the protesters decided to end their roadblock.
The agitators were instructed to clear the national highway by the YMA officials because the state’s residents would soon be suffering from a shortage of necessities, such as petroleum items that are imported from elsewhere.
The leaders also committed to addressing the issue of quickly paying out compensation to landowners before the end of November.
