GMC Sludge Extraction Scam: Main Accused Arrested In Rajasthan

Guwahati: Rajasthan police on Monday revealed the arrest of the principal suspect in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) sludge extraction scandal.

The Chief Engineer (CE) of GMC, Tajdiqur Rahman was captured today after being on the run ever since the incident came to light.

A team of officials from the Chief Minister’s Special Vigilance Cell was dispatched to Rajasthan to apprehend him and return him to Assam.

It should be mentioned that after being detained earlier in the day on October 21, all eight suspects in the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) corruption case were given to the Chief Minister’s Vigilance Cell for five days of imprisonment.

Eight suspects were arrested by investigators from the CM Vigilance Cell in Assam for allegedly taking part in the large GMC sludge extraction scam in Guwahati.

The arrested individuals were identified as GMC OSD Babulal Sharma, cleanliness officer Aafis Ahmed and Executive Engineers Shankar Medhi, Ramakant Saikia, Elleen Begum, Chittaranjan Dutta, and Hiranya Barman.

They also arrested the Director of Dinsan Global Venture, Dinesh Jaiswal in connection with the incident.

Officials claim that individuals who were arrested have a history of extorting money by presenting false invoices. They would print fictitious money under the pretence of sludge extraction.

Officers carried out an operation during which the corrupt GMC officials were detained after learning about the illicit actions.

Officials had said then that two accused in the case, Simantajyoti Barman and Tajdiqur Rahman were on the run.
