Justice DY Chandrachud Takes Oath as 50th CJI

Guwahati: Justice DY Chandrachud was sworn in as the next Chief Justice of India on Wednesday after Justice Uday Umesh Lalit resigned from his position.

Justice DY Chanderchud received the oath of office from President Droupadi Murmu during the swearing-in event that took place in the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and others were present on the occasion.

Chief Justice UU Lalit departed on November 9, and Justice Chanderchud will take his place.

Justice D Y Chandrachud, the senior-most judge on the Supreme Court of India, was elevated to the position of chief justice on Wednesday. His term will end on November 10, 2024.

The name of Dr. Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, a Supreme Court judge, was announced by the Centre Government this month. He will take office as Chief Justice of India on November 9, 2022.

The press statement issued in this regards stated that “In exercise of the power conferred by clause (2) of Article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Dr Justice Dhananjaya Yashwant Chandrachud, Judge of the Supreme Court, as the Chief Justice of India, with effect from November 9, 2022.”

Justice Chandrachud’s father Justice YV Chandrachud was the 16th Chief Justice of India serving from February 2, 1978, to July 11, 1985.

This is the first time in the judiciary’s history that a father and a son have held the position of Chief Justice.

Justice Chandrachud is regarded as a liberal and progressive judge in the nation. He is also regarded as having a keen awareness of citizens’ basic rights, and Justice Chandrachud’s most distinguishing quality is his firm stance against those who violate such rights.

The Supreme Court appointed Justice Chandrachud, who was born on November 11, 1959, to the position on May 13, 2016.

Prior to his nomination to the Supreme Court on October 31, 2013, he served as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court.

From March 29, 2000, till his appointment as Chief Justice of the Allahabad High Court, Justice Chandrachud served as a judge on the Bombay High Court.

Prior to his nomination as a judge on the Bombay High Court, he had also worked as India’s Additional Solicitor General from 1998 till the present. The Bombay High Court named him a senior counsel in June 1998.
