Assam CM: Kalakshetra Silver Jubilee to be Celebrated with Year-Long Events

Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that the Silver Jubilee Year will be celebrated with year-long events as Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra entered its 25th year on Wednesday.

The Assam Movement, which occurred in the 1980s, is where Kalakshetra’s origins can be traced. The institution was formed in accordance with the sixth paragraph of the Assam Accord.

The project was proposed by writer, editor and Director Late Bhabendra Nath Saikia in 1985.

The then Governor of Assam, Bhisma Narayan Singh laid the foundation stone for this project on February 2, 1988 and was inaugurated by the then President K R Narayanan on November 9, 1998.

Speaking on the occasion, CM Sarma said, “This institution has a serious duty towards the state and its citizens. It needs to locate a clear depiction of the state’s many traditions and civilizations. The preservation and dissemination of the music and folklore of all the local tribes must be a priority. It should also shed more light in this regard by scheduling more conversations in the area of culture.”

“This institution must promote itself to the outside world as the ideal example of Assamese life. It is the responsibility of those working in the fields of culture and language, as well as researchers and specialists, to place the institution in that position,” he added.

The celebration was attended by several dignitaries including Cabinet Ministers Bimal Bora and Atul Bora.
