Wild Elephants Trample 2 In Assam

Guwahati: In yet another incident of man-elephant conflict, at least two persons were trampled to death by wild elephants in Tinsukia district of Assam late on Sunday night.

The incident was reported at Bordubi Ting area at Doomdooma of the district.

The two deceased persons have been identified as Budin Bhumij and Ram Tanti.

The elephants went in a rampage after coming out of the Doomdooma reserve forest and entering human habitat.

Notably, there has recently been a sharp increase in human-elephant conflicts in Assam.

The main cause of the developing human-elephant conflict issue in Assam is thought to be human encroachment on forest lands.

Conflicts between humans and elephants have claimed the lives of over 800 people and over 900 elephants in Assam during the past ten years.

The human casualties mostly occur during the dry season when the animals move out of their habitat in search of food and water.
