Indonesia Earthquake: Death Toll Rises To 56
Guwahati: The death toll from a powerful earthquake that struck Indonesia on Monday has risen to 56.
Earlier, it was reported that a 5.6-magnitude earthquake had slammed Indonesia’s Cianjur in West Java, leaving at least 46 people dead and hundreds more injured.
US Geological Survey records indicate that the earthquake occurred at a shallow depth of 10 km (6 miles).
Reportedly, the tremors were felt around 100 km away in Jakarta as well.
Residents of multistory buildings were evacuated as soon as the earthquake hit the country.
Although at least 56 fatalities have been reported, authorities have warned that number may increase because to a potential aftershock.
People have been warned to stay vigilant for the aftershocks since there have been an estimated 700 injuries from the earthquake.
