M’laya CM Seeks NHRC Intervention into Mukroh Firing Incident
Guwahati: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma has asked the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) to look into the shooting incident at Mukroh.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), CM Sangma and deputy chief minister Prestone Tynsong visited the NHRC’s other members and their chairperson justice Arun Kumar Mishra on Friday in New Delhi.
Conrad Sangma described the occurrence as an “obvious breach of human rights” and enlisted the help of the NHRC to encourage them to take the appropriate steps.
Taking to twitter, Sangma wrote, “Gave a detailed account of the firing incident that claimed 6 lives at Mukroh to Hon’ble Justice Arun Kumar Mishra Ji, Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission and other members of the NHRC with Hon’ble Deputy CM Prestone Tynsong.”
“Informed the Hon’ble Chairperson and the members that the Mukroh incident was a clear violation of human rights. Apprised them about the actions that have been taken like the Central Agency enquiry into the matter,” he further tweeted.
Sangma further emphasised the necessity of properly sensitising forces stationed in sensitive places in order to prevent such tragedies from occurring in the future.
It may be mentioned that, at least six people, including an Assam forest guard, were killed in the firing incident along the inter-state border on November 22 after a truck transporting illegally-felled timber was intercepted by forest personnel of Assam.
