Mahatma Gandhi’s Statue to be Inaugurated at UN on Dec 14
Guwahati: A statue of Mahatma Gandhi will be inaugurated at the UN’s headquarter on December 14 during India’s Presidency of the Security Council next month.
According to reports, the first statue of Bapu to be erected at the headquarters of the international organisation will be the one created by renowned Indian artist Ram Sutar who received the Padma Shree award.
During External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar’s visit to the UN for India’s Presidency of the Council, it will be officially inaugurated as a gift from India.
The statue will be installed on the UN headquarters’ sizable North Lawns.
Reportedly, all the 15 members of the Security Council will be present for the statue’s inauguration as well as five new members who will take their seats on the Council on January 1, 2023.
It should be noted that the only other piece of Indian art on exhibit at the UN headquarters is an 11th-century black-stone statue of “Surya” that was given as a gift by the late Indira Gandhi on July 26, 1982.
