Assam Mosque to Muslims: Do not Attend Burial of Drug Addicts

Guwahati: A mosque committee and the locals of Juria in Assam’s Nagaon district have agreed not to attend the funeral of any Muslim who dies from drug use. The decision has been made to combat the drug threat.

The Udmari Balugutia Jame Masjid in Juria is regarded as having made a brave decision in regards to combating the drug problem in the region and the state.

Fazlul Hoque Morol, a member of the mosque committee, said, “The decision, which is the need of the hour to save the young generation from drugs, has been taken at the executive meeting of the committee on Monday. The panel has also decided not to provide any help to the families of the individuals who died due to consumption of drugs. Villagers have appreciated the decisions as these have been taken for the greater interest of the young generation,” reported TOI.

He added that it is the duty of every individual to join hands with the government in the fight against drugs.

The Assam Police has seized drugs worth more than Rs 550 crore since the Himanta Biswa Sarma government took office on May 10 of last year. Over 3,000 cases have been registered under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and more than 5,000 drug peddlers/ traffickers have been arrested while over 100 kg of heroin, 2.7 lakh bottles of cough syrup, over 39 lakh contraband tablets and several other banned narcotic substances have been seized.

Morol said, “There have been a number of drug-related cases reported during the past year in Juria. Many teenagers have been detained by police. There are other options besides that. Additionally, society has some obligations. We cannot allow the youth to perish in such a way.”
