Anand Sarma Undergoes successful surgery after being injured in DU ragging incident

Guwahati: Anand Sarma, the victim of the ragging incident that has shaken Dibrugarh University, underwent surgery on Thursday and recovered well, according to hospital authorities.

The procedure was carried out under the skilled supervision of Dr. Pannalal, a specialist. He underwent surgery to repair his broken backbone, which was sustained after he leaped from his hostel’s second floor to escape senior staff ragging.

The lengthy surgery reportedly started this morning at 10 am and was successfully finished.

It should be mentioned that a high-level committee has been established in response to the regrettable racial event that took place on November 27 at Dibrugarh University in Assam.

This comes after a student at Dibrugarh University’s Padmanath Gohain Baruah Hostel jumped off the second floor after being beaten up by senior-year students in the name of ragging.

The newly constituted committee will have three days to submit a report. It will reportedly be presided over by retired Sibsagar Commerce College Principal Kartik Chandra Dutta.

The committee will have five members in total. They are Dr. Pradip Kumar Baruah, a retired professor from Dibrugarh University, and Dr. Deepak Kumar Sharma, a retired professor from Kakojan College.

The group will also comprise retired Dibrugarh University executive member Bijoy Krishna Pasoni along with Dr. Bhajel Sonowal serving as coordinator.

Anand Sarma, a junior in the Dibrugarh University’s commerce programme, suffered significant injuries when he jumped from the second story of the dorm to escape a brutal attack by seniors engaged in ragging.

He was taken by ambulance to a neighbouring hospital, where he is now fighting for his life and is being closely monitored.

Along with Sarma, there were reportedly two other juniors who were raped. Following the incident, the victim’s family filed a report, and the accused was then put into custody.
