Guwahati: At least five people were arrested from Basistha Chariali area of Guwahati on Saturday and fake gold bars have been seized from their possession.
Two of the arrested people are Jharkhand locals, two are from the Lakhimpur district and one is from the Barpeta district.
Four fake gold bars were recovered from their possession by the Hatigaon Police.
Santosh Jauri and Mukesh Kumar from Jharkhand had come to buy the gold. The gold sellers were Hasen Ali of Naoboicha, Sirajul Ali of Salbari and Sahidul Islam of Lakhimpur.
The gold sellers allegedly intended to defraud someone.
Meanwhile, an investigation has been launched into the incident.
