Meghalaya: Ex-CM Mukul Sangma To Contest Assembly Polls
Guwahati: Former chief minister Mukul Sangma and the leader of the opposition, is most likely to run in the 2023 Meghalaya Assembly elections from two seats. Meghalaya will have its assembly elections early in the following year.
According to reports, Mukul ran for office in the previous elections from the Ampati and Songsak constituencies. This time he also plans to run from his home constituency Songsak.
In 2018, the former chief minister Sangma won elections in Ampati and Songsak but later gave up the position in Ampati.
Miani D Shira the daughter of Sangma won the seat in the ensuing byelection held in May 2018.
Twelve of the seventeen Congress MLAs left the party and joined the Trinamool Congress in November of last year under the leadership of the former chief minister Mukul Sangma.
A TMC MLA George B. Lyngdoh and chief whip for the opposition disagreed with the report.
“Dr Mukul has been working hard for the organisation across the state and there has been a strong focus in Tikrikilla,” the newspaper quoted Lyngdoh as saying.
There are rumours that current MLA for the Tikrikilla constituency Jimmy D. Sangma may leave the TMC and join the NPP.
Himalaya Muktan Shangpliang (Mawsynram), a TMC lawmaker from Meghalaya resigned from the 11th legislative assembly on November 29 and made the decision to join the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
