Zelenskyy Named Time Megazine’s ‘Person Of The Year’
Guwahati: Time magazine selected Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy its “Person of the Year” on Wednesday.
Zelenskyy was picked by Time magazine earlier this week from a shortlist of ten individuals or entities for the position.
Zelenskyy has commanded Ukraine since the start of the war between Russia and Ukraine in late February as it has fought to prevent a full-scale Russian invasion of the country, elevating Ukraine to a leading position on the global stage, according to reports.
The conflict also saw a succession of victories under the leadership of the Ukrainian president most of which stopped Russia from advancing and allowed Ukraine to reclaim lost territory.
The liberation of Kherson City earlier in November was celebrated by the Ukrainian populace as Ukrainian forces rushed into the regional capital and Russian troops withdrew to the east.
Reportedly, since the Russian invasion started in February 2022, Russian assaults in Ukraine have caused damage to more than 700 vital infrastructure facilities and 32,000 civilian targets.
“As one would expect of the terrorists, Russians target civilian targets. To date, about 32,000 such targets have been damaged by Russian missiles and shells. These are primarily private houses or civilian apartment buildings,” Yevhenii Yenin, a Ukrainian diplomat, said in an interview with Ukrainian media recently.
“Only 3 per cent of recorded attacks have been on military facilities. As of now, more than 700 critical infrastructure facilities — airfields, bridges, oil depots, electricity substations, etc — all of these got hit,” Yenin said.
Meanwhile, Zelenskyy urged the UN Security Council to back Ukraine’s “peace formula.”
Zelenskyy recently emphasised that there must be no place in the world for terror in a virtual address to the UNSC (United Nations Security Council).
“It’s time to endorse the Ukrainian Peace Formula, I reiterate. There must be no room for horror in the world at all!,” Zelenskyy said.
