“You Won’t Be Able To Buy Loose Cigarettes Soon”

Guwahati: The sale of single cigarettes to customers would soon be prohibited by the government.

The Standing Committee of Parliament has advocated banning the sale of loose cigarettes in order to reduce the consumption of tobacco products.

The committee argued in support of the prohibition that the sale of single cigarettes is having an impact on the tobacco control effort.

The committee also suggested eliminating smoking zones from all domestic airports in addition to the prohibition on single sales.

The sale and production of single cigarettes might be outlawed shortly if the government agrees to follow the advice.

The committee emphasised how using smoke and alcohol increases the risk of developing cancer.

It should be noted that, following the Health Ministry’s recommendation, the Center banned the sale and use of e-cigarettes three years ago.

According to numerous reports, smoking causes at least 3.5 lakh deaths annually. A survey done in 2018 by the National Council of Applied Economic Research revealed that 46% of smokers lack a high school diploma while 16% are enrolled in college.

The government already forbids smoking in public places, and offenders face a fine of 200 rupees.

The government also forbids the promotion of tobacco goods.
