Mukroh shooting: Mamata To Hand over Rs 5 lakh ex-gratia to kin of victims
Guwahati: The All India Trinamool Congress (TMC) Chairperson Mamata Banerjee on December 13 would give ex-gratia checks in the amount of Rs 5 lakh to the families of those killed in the Mukroh border conflict.
She interacted with the Mukroh border clash victims on December 12 during a private meeting at the Pinewood Hotel in Shillong.
”Our Hon’ble Chairperson Ms. Mamata Banerjee interacted with the victims of the Mukroh border clash in a closed-door meeting at Pinewood Hotel, Shillong. She will be handing out cheques of ex-gratia amount of ₹5 lakhs to the families of the victims,” an official statement said.
She would give the ex-gratia cheques before heading to the Party Workers’ Convention at the state central library in Shillong.
Notably, the firing took place following an alleged clash between an Assam Police team and a mob, in an area bordering the West Karbi Anglong district of Assam and Mukroh village in Meghalaya’s West Jaintia Hills district.
The Assam Police asserted that they fired in self-defense when a mob closed in on them as they attempted to stop a truck that was reportedly smuggling timber.
They also claimed that the incident occurred within the territory of Assam.
Meghalaya CM Conrad K Sangma condemned the Assam Police and forest guards for “entering Meghalaya” and using “unprovoked gunfire.”
The residents of Mukroh village claimed that the shooting occurred in Meghalaya and without provocation.
Later, the Assam chief minister declared that a retired judge from the High Court would lead a one-man investigation into the incident, and that the CBI would take over the police investigation.
His counterpart Sangma urged an investigation by a Central agency when she met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on November 24.
