AHRC Directed Nagaon Admin to Submit Report on Eviction

Guwahati: The Assam human rights commission (AHRC) has directed the Nagaon district administration to submit a detailed report on the recent eviction drive taking place out near Batradava Than.

The deputy commissioner of Nagaon Narendra Kumar Shah has been ordered by the AHRC to produce a thorough report on the Batradava eviction matter by January 18 of the next year.

Notably, the eviction drive was conducted by the Assam government on Monday and Tuesday.

In the Santijan Bazaar area, Haidubi, Lalungaon, Jamaibasti and Balisatra in Batadrava Mouza under Dhing revenue circle of Nagaon district more than 1200 bighas of land were purportedly freed of encroachers.

A significant number of security personnel were deployed during the eviction drive.

In four villages in the district, encroaching government lands are being cleared as a result of the eviction drive.

According to the Nagaon SP, the locals were cooperative because more than 80% of them removed their homes, businesses and other structures and left.

It should be noted that in October, the district administration had given over 1000 families notices to remove the encroached land.

The state’s eviction campaigns to clear government and forest land will continue, according to Himanta Biswa Sarma, the chief minister of Assam, who made the statement on Wednesday.

Speaking in the assembly yesterday during a Zero Hour discussion initiated by Congress MLA Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha, Sarma said the BJP government will continue to carry out eviction exercises and “there is no point talking about it”.

“Eviction is a continuous process and it won’t stop. We will clear forest and government land (across the state) as well as in Batadrava,” he said.

Sarma said Sattras (Vaishnavite monasteries) just like Batadrava represent the identity and culture of the Assamese people.
