BJP Gains One? NDPP MLA Quits Party Ahead of Nagaland Polls
Guwahati: In another jolt to Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) ahead of the upcoming Nagaland Assembly elections, party MLA Imkong L Imchen has resigned as the legislator on Saturday.
Kumar is said to have tendered his resignation citing personal reasons, which was submitted to the Speaker of the Nagaland Legislative Assembly.
As per reports, Imchen is expected to run for office in the legislature on the BJP ticket.
The Assembly Elections in Nagaland are slated to be held on February 27. The results will be declared on March 2.
Secretary General of Naga People’s Front (NPF) Achumbemo Kikon stated that the party’s top priority would continue to be an honourable resolution to the Naga political issue. The NPF hopes that people will respond positively as the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced the schedule for the Nagaland Assembly elections as one of the state’s oldest regional parties.
The NPF Secretary General stated that the party’s top priority continues to be an honourable resolution to the Naga political crisis as one of the oldest regional parties in the state. He expressed optimism that this will elicit a favourable response from the general public.
Presently there is no opposition in Nagaland.
The United Democratic Alliance (UDA) which consists of NDPP, BJP, NPF, and Independent MLAs is the new name of the government in Nagaland as of September last year.
All like-minded parties are encouraged to band together to overthrow the UDA government after a call from Congress.
The NDPP president and BJP leader YV Patton both entered office as chief ministers after the Nephiu Rio-led coalition defeated the Congress party in the most recent elections.
The BJP was successful in winning 12 of the 20 seats it was running for in the 2018 elections.
This time, the BJP is asking for 30 seats in the NDPP-led coalition.
