Guwahati: The 41st Prime Minister of New Zealand, Chris Hipkins was sworn in on Wednesday, according to the state broadcaster RNZ.
Jacinda Ardern left Parliament as prime minister for the last time this morning following the formal transfer of power. She then went to Government House to formally present her resignation and go to the opposition benches.
According to RNZ, Hipkins and new deputy prime minister Carmel Sepuloni arrived there for the swearing-in event at around 11.20 a.m. Hipkins has indicated that his administration will place a high premium on combating the “inflation pandemic.”
Hipkins was initially elected to the legislature in 2008 and in November 2020, he was named Covid-19’s minister.
He served as the minister of public service, education and law enforcement.
A leadership election for the Labour Party was precipitated by Jacinda Ardern’s unexpected departure.
After managing New Zealand during the coronavirus pandemic for five and a half years, Ardern made the surprising decision.
Ardern claimed that although she understood what it takes to be prime minister, she “no longer had enough in the tank to do it properly” but that there were others who could.
She claimed that her government had accomplished a lot and that she was stepping down despite her belief that Labour could win the next election.
