Assam CM: 1800 People Arrested Statewide in Child Marriage Cases
Guwahati: As many as 1800 persons have been apprehended in connection with child marriage cases in Assam.
Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma informed this while briefing media persons on Friday.
CM Sarma said, “Till 8 am today, a total of 1800 people were arrested in connection to child marriage-related cases in various districts of the state. The police will continue extensive statewide operations in the next three to four days. The exact details on the arrests will be further clarified by the DGP in the evening.”
It should be noted that the Assam Police have started a massive campaign against child marriages in all of the state’s districts.
As per reports, 53 people have been arrested in Guwahati so far. In addition, 192 child marriage-related cases have been reported at various police stations under the Guwahati Police Commissionerate, according to a senior police official.
The Assam Chief Minister issued an order to begin a statewide crackdown on child marriage on Thursday night.
Earlier on Thursday, the chief minister asked the populace to support the initiative and said that Friday will see the start of action on the 4,004 registered instances.
