Congress’ 85th Plenary Session Commences With Key Decisions

Guwahati: The Congress’ 85th plenary session kicked off on February 24, with the party’s steering committee meet to make key choices regarding the holding of CWC polls before the 85th Congress’ plenary session began.

The party will likely complete its plan to form coalitions with opposing parties to challenge the BJP in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections at the three-day meeting. With the exception of Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, the top brass of the Congress will be there, endorsing the presidency of Mallikarjun Kharge and opening the way for the new working committee led by him.

Elections for the top decision-making body will be decided by the steering committee which will serve as the Working Committee until a new CWC is created. The subjects committee will then convene at 4 PM to discuss six resolutions connected to politics, business, the economy, the world, agriculture and farmers’ welfare, social justice and women’s empowerment and youth, employment and education.

Resolutions pertaining to political, economic and foreign issues will be considered on February 25.

The President of the Congress will speak on February 26 and then there will be a public gathering.

The session’s objectives are to finalise the party’s plans to challenge the BJP in the next elections and to draw out a clear road map for the party’s future.

Yet the Congress is divided, with the TMC, BRS and AAP refusing to acknowledge the party’s leadership and BRS Chairman K Chandrashekhar Rao engaging in his own negotiations to restrain the BJP.

The Congress is facing unprecedented problems both in terms of elections and retaining its leadership position within the Opposition coalition. The party has asserted that it alone had the organisational and moral strength to lead it but it still aims to put together an anti-BJP front for the 2024 elections.
