Assam will soon have largest lake at Silsako in Guwahati, says CM
Guwahati: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma declared on February 28 that the largest lake in the world will soon be near Guwahati at Silsako.
Taking to his Twitter handle, the Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma wrote, “A spectacular model of the proposed Silsako lake has been designed and it will add to the scenic grandeur & ease the perennial artificial flooding in Guwahati.”
The Himanta Biswa Sarma administration’s ongoing campaign to prevent the invasion of government land in Assam should be noted here. On February 27, officials in Guwahati forcibly removed almost 300 households of indigenous people and destroyed two temples.
At least 1,000 police officers were stationed at Guwahati’s Silsako Beel to purge approximately 132 acres of land of accused encroachers. The goddess Durga and Lord Shiva each had their own temples that were demolished.
Discontent has been raised as expected as a result of the initiative, which was organised by the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA).
After taking office in May 2021, the Himanta Biswa Sarma administration has conducted eviction drives in a number of Assam locations. There have been several significant eviction operations over the previous three months, during which temples, mosques and madrassas have also been demolished.
