Counting Of Votes For Bypolls In 5 States Underway

Guwahati: Votes for by-elections to two assembly seats in Maharashtra as well as one assembly constituency in each of Arunachal Pradesh, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu will be counted beginning on Thursday.

All of these assembly constituencies held voting on Monday.

A total of 77 people from various political backgrounds are running for the coveted Assembly seat in Tamil Nadu’s Erode East.

However, the byelection is primarily between Thennarasu of the AIADMK and EVKS Elangovan of the Congress.

Elangovan ran for office in the byelection with support from the DMK, which is also Congress’ more significant coalition partner.

With the recent Supreme Court decision that permitted him to continue leading the AIADMK, the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, Edappadi Palaniswami has a chance to establish himself as a strong leader and confirm his control over the group if the Erode byelection results in his favour.

The Naam Tamizlar Katchi (NTK), the Desiya Morpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) and a number of other parties are also competing for the coveted seat, giving the AIADMK a tough fight.

The sudden death of Congress MLA Thirumahan Eveera made the bypoll necessary.

By-election counting for the Chinchwad and Kasba Peth assembly seats will take place in Maharashtra.

The fate of the Kasba Peth election will be decided by a contest between the BJP and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), with the latter placing Congress candidate Ravindra Dhangekar against the BJP’s Hemant Rasane.

Vitthal Kate of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), Ashwini Jagtap of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), and Rahul Kalate of the Independent Party are the candidates in Chinchwad. After the passing of BJP MLAs Mukta Tilak from the Kasba Peth Assembly constituency and Laxman Jagtap from the Chinchwad Assembly constituency, bye-elections were required.

A by-election for the Sagardighi assembly seat in West Bengal became necessary as Trinamool Congress (TMC) politician Subrata Saha passed away in December 2022. Debashish Banerjee and Dilip Saha, respectively, were put out by the TMC and the BJP. Bayron Biswas was the Congressman who received support from the Left.

There are 18 candidates running for the Ramgarh assembly seat in Jharkhand, including 14 independents.

Because Congress politician Mamta Devi was disqualified, the byelections were required.

The All Jharkhand Students Union (AJSU) Party nominated Sunita Choudhary as its leader, while Mamta Devi’s husband, Bajrang Mahto, stood for office under the banner of the Congress.

Together with the by-election results, the assembly elections for the three northeastern states of Tripura, Nagaland, and Meghalaya are also being counted.
