Assam: Demand for Action in Dog Meat Controversy Interrupt the Budget Session

Guwahati: The Assam Legislative Assembly’s first day of the budget session was disrupted on Friday by Raijor Dal leader Akhil Gogoi and Congress MLAs Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha and Rokibul Hussain.

This follows repeated requests from Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma to refrain from interfering with the assembly’s business as the budget session gets underway today.

According to reports, the three was in charge of causing disturbances as Gulab Chand Kataria the newly elected governor of Assam addressed the parliament to begin the budget session.

The Governor’s remarks prior to the budget session was shortened to barely 17 minutes as a result of the disruptions. Nonetheless, despite interfering with the budget session’s proceedings the trio made compelling points.

They raised the issue of Maharashtra MLA Bacchu Kadu calling Assamese people “consumers of dog meat” and proposed that in an effort to solve their issues street dogs from Maharashtra be sent here.

The opposition demanded that the problem be addressed in the Assam Governor’s speech and Congress Member Kamalakhya Dey Purkayastha brought it up.

On the opening day of the budget session, the opposition urged that the Assam government take up the issue as well instead of letting it slip.

It should be noted that during the proceedings of the Maharashtra assembly session, Lawmaker Bacchu Kadu urged that the state’s street dogs be transported to Assam because residents in this region eat them. According to Kadu, this would aid in the reduction of the area’s growing problem with stray dogs.

The stupid remarks were inappropriate and drew a lot of criticism from both animal rights organisations and some Assamese citizens.

One of the MLAs that travelled to Guwahati in Assam with the then dissident MLA and current chief minister of Maharashtra, Eknath Shinde in order to overthrow the elected government in their state was Bacchu Kadu.

However, the Assam administration did not take the issue seriously and there are many rumours that this is because of their strong relations to the Maharashtra government.
