Centre Extends Deadline for Linking Aadhaar with Voter ID

Guwahati: The Aadhaar number must now be linked to a voter identification card by March 31, 2024, according to the Central Government.

Aadhaar and voter identification were last linked on April 1, 2023.

Applications to add names to the electoral roll may not be rejected, according to a gazette notice from the Ministry of Law and Justice. Further, it stated that if a voter does not present an Aadhaar number their name will not be removed from the electoral roll.

The revised deadline is March 31, 2024, so citizens now have an additional year to finish the process of integrating Aadhaar with voter identification.

The Ministry of Law and Justice, in a notification said, “The Central Government hereby makes the following amendment in the notification of the Government of India in the Ministry of Law and Justice (Legislative Department), number S.O.2893(E), dated 17th June 2022, namely:- In the said notification, for the words and figures, “the 1st April 2023” for the words and figures, “the 31st March , 2024” shall be substituted.”

Earlier, the Election Laws (Amendment) Act, 2021 passed by the parliament in December 2021 gave the Election Commission of India (ECI) the authority to order everyone to link their Voter ID card with their Aadhaar card.

Linking the two identification cards is intended to verify voter registration information, verify voter identity and determine whether a person is registered in the same constituency more than once or in different constituencies. The ECI also started a number of efforts in this area.
