Elephants Allegedly Being Smuggled to Gujarat from Arunachal Via Assam
Guwahati: As many as 25 elephants were allegedly being smuggled on Friday from Namsai of Arunachal Pradesh to Jamnagar of Gujarat via Assam, according to another instance that has purportedly come to light.
According to reports, 25 Namsai elephants were being moved through Assam under police protection. The elephants were also thought to have crossed the Arunachal-Assam border at 1 AM on April 21 and suspected to reached in Tezpur soon.
However, the elephants were being taken with legal documents of ownership to Gujarat temples.
Reportedly, some residents stopped these elephants but ‘papers’ were allegedly produced before them.
Moreover, it is suspected that these wild elephants from Dehing Patkai National Park.
Last night, two elephants from Banderdewa, Arunachal Pradesh that were being smuggled through the borders of Assam and West Bengal to Jamnagar, Gujarat were seized in West Bengal.
The elephants were being transported by the vehicle with the licence plate (NL-02K-4034).
The elephants and the vehicle were intercepted in West Bengal.while trying to cross the Chagolia border into Assam.
It is suspected that the elephants were being transported from Banderdewa, Arunachal Pradesh to the reliance-owned “Greens Zoological Rescue and Rehabilitation Kingdom” in Jamnagar.
The truck and the elephants were impounded at Teesta in West Bengal with the help of police officers and the West Bengal Forest Department under the direction of Deepak Chandra Deka the Forest officer of Dhubri and his team.
According to reports, the elephants were kept in a secure environment at Gorumara National Park.
