Guwahati: Why do doctors wear green clothes during surgery? You will be surprised to know the reason. On our way to the hospital, we usually see doctors wearing special green clothes. They also wear those clothes during the surgery. In such a situation, the question naturally arises, why doctors wear only green clothes?
There is of course a strange reason behind this. You must have noticed that whenever you suddenly enter a dark room from a bright spot, the eyes become completely black i.e. nothing is seen for some time. In such a situation, exposure to green or blue color provides relief. The same thing happens in case of doctors in operation theatre.
Meanwhile, many people have raised questions in this regard on a science website, which was answered by a person named Vikas Mishra. Vikas studied electronics and communication engineering at the St. Francis Institute of Technology. He points out that green and blue are opposites in the spectrum of light. In such a situation, the doctor’s attention during the operation is mostly on red color. That is, the green and blue colours of the clothes not only enhance the eyesight of a surgeon but also make him more sensitive to red.
The first surgical specialist also wore Sushruta: a report in this regard had already appeared in the 1998 issue of Today’s Surgical Nurses. Where it is said, green clothing relaxes the eyes during surgery.
According to Dr Deepak Jain, a surgical specialist working at Delhi’s BLK Super Specialty Hospital, Sushruta, considered the world’s first surgical specialist, also wrote about the use of green colour during Ayurvedic surgeries. But there is no specific reason for this. In many places surgical specialists also wear blue and white dress during surgeries. But green is good in this regard because the blood stains appear brown in it.
Earlier it was customary to wear white: in this context it is not the practice of a doctor to wear blue or green from the beginning.
According to media reports, earlier doctors and all the hospital staff use to wear white clothes. But in 1914 a doctor changed it to green. Since then this dress code has become a trend. Some doctors these days also wear blue coloured dress.
