Meghalaya By-Polls: UDP Candidate Wins Sohiong Constituency
National Desk, 13 May: United Democratic Party (UDP) candidate Synshar Kupar Roy Lyngdoh Thabah wins the Sohiong constituency by a sizable margin.
The UDP candidate was ahead with 3321 votes as of the sixth round of counting but the final results appear to show that the UDP candidate won by a commanding 3422 votes (including postal ballots).
The Sohiong by-election voting took place amidst strict security measures on May 10.
Sohiong by-election was required since voting in the district had to be delayed because UDP candidate HDR Lyngdoh had passed away while Meghalaya was holding Assembly elections on February 27.
According to data made public by the Election Commission, Meghalaya recorded a remarkable turnout rate of nearly 90 percent.
