Violence in Manipur: CM Biren Singh Meets Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi

National Desk, 15 May: Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh has since returned to Imphal after meeting the Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi on May 14 to review the present state of affairs in the violent state.

According to reports, N Biren Singh travelled with four other state officials. JP Nadda, president of the BJP at the national level also attended the meeting.

Additionally, the state leadership was instructed to promptly engage the public and carry out extensive outreach regarding the crisis.

Reportedly, the Centre has promised that anyone who has sought to sabotage the calm in the area would not be spared.

On May 3, after tribal groups staged a march in the ten hill regions of the state to oppose the Meitei ethnic group’s desire for Scheduled Tribe (ST) designation, violence erupted in Manipur. The hostilities caused the displacement of almost 23,000 people and several fatalities.

Earlier, Biren Singh pleaded with the populace to keep the state peaceful and harmonious. However, as authorities seek to restore normalcy to the violently disturbed state of Manipur, the Indian Armed Forces have dispatched autonomous elevated vehicles (UAVs) and helicopters to keep an eye on critical areas throughout the state.

After the key meeting with the Home Minister, CM N Biren Singh has now returned to Imphal and will give a press conference on May 15 at 9:30 am.
