Guwahati: Water Supply Pipe Bursts in Kharguli, 1 Dead and 30 Injured
Guwahati, 25 May: A pipe in the Gammon JICA water supply main line bursted in Kharguli area of Guwahati at around 3 p.m. on Tuesday. The burst resulted in a huge water gush that damaged at least 40 homes and washed away several vehicles. Over 600 persons are said to have been impacted by the tragedy.
According to reports, a women lost her life in the tragedy who have been identified as Sumitra Rabha. She lived in one of the homes that the water surged and ruined. Meanwhile, the injured were taken to the local hospitals. The area has been closed off by the police who are also investigating the reason behind the tragedy.
According to the Guwahati Metropolitan Development Authority (GMDA), the water supply would be quickly restored. However, those who were impacted by the tragedy have expressed their anger and frustration. The people have claimed reimbursement from the GMDA for the damage caused to their property.
The incident has brought up the issue of Guwahati’s poor infrastructure once more. The city has been dealing with numerous issues as a result of the poor roads, bridges and other infrastructure. To avoid similar incidents in the future, the government must take action for such infrastructure in the city.
